What is renal dialysis?
The kidneys filter blood by removing excess fluid and waste and from your body. This waste moves to the bladder to be removed when you urinate.
Dialysis essentially performs the function of the kidneys if they have failed. Dialysis treatment that purifies and filters the blood using a special machine. The process helps keep your fluids and electrolytes in balance when the kidneys can’t do their job.

What to expect
during renal dialysis
During dialysis, an artificial kidney (hemodialyzer) is used to remove waste and extra fluid from the blood. The blood is removed from the body and filtered through the artificial kidney. The filtered blood is then returned to the body with the help of a dialysis machine.
To get the blood to flow to the artificial kidney, your doctor may perform surgery to gain entry into your blood vessels.

Who needs
renal dialysis?
If your kidney disease becomes very serious and reaches a point where there’s not enough function to maintain the body, then you most likely need either dialysis or a transplant.
Typically, you will start dialysis when you have symptoms or lab tests showing toxic waste levels in the blood. Symptoms of kidney failure include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and swelling.
When you should start dialysis depends on your energy level, age, overall health, lab test results, your commitment to a treatment plan. Although dialysis can make you feel better and live longer, it is also very time-consuming. Your doctor will advise you on the best time to start treatment.
